In 1966 Alfa Romeo presented the first Spider at the Geneva Motor Show: the 1600 Spider. The chassis was based on that of a Giulia 105 and the design came from Pininfarina, the last model from Battista Pininfarina itself. The two-seater got a 1600 cc four-cylinder engine with 109 hp. After a competition, the model was christened Duetto.

In 1967, Dustin Hoffman drives a Spider Duetto in the film The Graduate, which immediately made the car popular on the other side of the ocean. In the same year, the Spider received its first update with the 1750 Spider Veloce, presented at the Brussels motor show. It gets the engine from the 1750 Veloce and now has 113 hp. In 1968 the Spider 1300 Junior was introduced with a smaller 1290 cc engine that produced 89 hp.

With the Fastback Spider in 1969, the styling was changed significantly for the first time. The main difference was in the rear section of the car: the “sepia shell” was replaced by a sportier and more modern looking straight stern. In 1971 the 2000 Spider Veloce was introduced, now with 131 hp engine. The 2000 replaced the 1750 and a year later the 1300 was also replaced by the 1600 Junior.

On March 10, 1983, a new Spider was presented at the Geneva Salon with a large rubber spoiler and rear bumpers, which seriously changed the appearance of the car. The Junior name was deleted and the Spider now has the type designations 1.6 and 2.0. This version is also sometimes called spoiler Spider. The best known name is “Spider type III” or “Spider Aerodinamica”.

At the 1986 Geneva Motor Show, Alfa Romeo presented the Spider Quadrifoglio Verde with a hardtop. It also got a bigger front spoiler, side skirts and several other minor changes.

In 1990 it received a thorough facelift for the last time and in 1993 the last classic Spider left the band. The model was built for 26 years.

This Alfa Romeo 2.0 Spider was delivered new in 1991 in Italy and has driven there until 2020. After that, the car was sold to the Netherlands and now has a Dutch registration. The car has recently undergone a major overhaul and will be given a new MOT upon sale. It is a beautiful version in the color black with a brown, mocha interior.
